The front panel is hinged at the bottom and held by a gas strut, so it lowers slowly instead of dropping, even when you reach for it half asleep in the dark.

A small catch at the front keeps it firmly closed the rest of the time, and the top stays free for a book or a clock, and the latch is easy to find by touch.

With no legs underneath, the shelf leaves the floor beside the bed completely open, which helps a small bedroom feel larger and makes cleaning underneath quick.
